Week 44

On Halloween we only took some photos outside my mom's house before we headed out to trick-or-treat. I did have my camera on me when we went, but I was more preoccupied with running after a little ewok and making sure Luke Skywalker didn't get too ahead of himself. The rest are at the Renaissance Faire held every year at Young Park. I took lots of photos, but I think these two best exemplify a certain part of my kids' personalities (also Sophia loves her corn and makes sure we get one at any event if available). The canoe shot I like because Nathan took the initiative to take a ride around the lake because even though he can be adventurous he can also be quite timid when it coms to new experiences. The last is my favorite photo of the faire because the image of him sitting huddled against the cold breeze in the midst of all his clocks was just too good to miss. I didn't even ask his name, only if I could take his photo. I am going to try and locate him so I can email it to him and thank him for his kindness.

Week 43

The first photo is of Ladybug making eyes at me in the morning hours after I took Nathan to his bus stop. The second photo is of my mother-in-law Tommie's sewing machine, which was given to me by Craig's dad. I was really honored to have it, and after a brief tutorial from my friend Beth I got to making some Halloween costumes. It is really nice to be able to sew with a machine because it cuts down on production time since I used to hand stitch everything before.

Week 42

My friend Aidee asked if I could do some fun portraits of her and her kids in celebration of Halloween. I used my flash on the first two inside her house so I had to clean up the background since I used a textured white wall as the backdrop. I had three final photos for the Black Swan shoot, but I only posted one here because they all had the same text and seemed repetitive in one post. I have my friend Carlos to thank for helping me find the correct font, which ended up being a stylized Trajan Pro (he's a genius). As for the Wizard of Oz photo we had originally planned to shoot it at Memorial Park on the bridge, but the kids had had enough of our photo shenanigans so I had to improvise and add a fake background post production. This one shot is actually three different pictures composed into one. Thinking on it now, I would have shot them all in even lighting to make it look less super imposed. It was a fun, learning experience though, and Aidee loved the finished photos.

Week 41

It was a busy week, but mostly a really busy Saturday. We were invited to many events that day, but we only ended up going to three: two birthday parties and Chalk the Block 2011. The first photo I took for my brother because he always sending me random photos, the last of which was some toilet paper, so I wanted to send him one of my toilet paper and it just so happened the morning light lend itself to creating a much more appealing image. The second is of some bricks at my mom's house that caught my eye; nothing too life altering, but I liked the shapes and light. Finally, the last is a close up of my friend Yvianna working on her chalk mural. I took some creative liberties with the color selection.

Almost forgot!

This gentleman was at the beauty school where the bride was getting ready. He caught my eye when I passed him on the way to the restroom, but I didn't ask him for a photograph. Later when we were leaving he just happened to be sitting on the way out so I worked up the nerve and asked. He was very kind and more than happy to oblige my request. I just love everything about him. He was so well groomed from his hair to his neat, white shoes. My favorite thing about him though was his glasses.

Week 40 Mission accomplished!

I finally got Jareth to smile for me in a photo. I remembered Rachele saying she sings "It's a Small World" to him regularly so I (very badly) started to sing, and after an initial look of surprise he gifted me with the cutest little smile. Joy!

Week 39 Farmer wedding

This wedding was referred to me last minute because the couple's photographer canceled on them. I usually like to get to know people before I shoot their wedding to get a better feel of what is important to them, but I also didn't want them to not be able to find a photographer. It turned out well because it was a small wedding, and I didn't have to run around worrying I might miss something with my limited knowledge of their family dynamics. These two photos are a good indication of how I shot the wedding since I didn't do much in the way of artistic implements. (These are also a good indication of how I have been feeling in general about event and portrait photography. I think that sometimes less is more since I have been seeing a lot of over-processing in images, and I find myself more and more drawn to my journalistic school of thought than to the artistic one. I do enjoy using some of these effects on certain photographs which lend themselves to such, but as a rule of thumb I try not to use them for more than just a handful of images of a whole event).

Week 39

Two different lighting situations, but just one Jareth! I babysat him (who else thinks that is a weird expression?), and he was a joy to have around. I still haven't been able to get him to smile for a photo, but I will be watching him a couple of times a week now so I've made it a mission of mine to capture his cute little smile.

The second part of this post seems mostly like a study in light and texture to me. I really like the photo of the trunk because the colors were so vibrant and it reminded me of a human torso. Upon further inspection I noticed the little clovers growing at its base and had to take a few of them.

Week 39 Kiehne family portraits

I had a great time photographing the Kiehne family today, especially since it was around sunset and we were at the base of the Organ Mountains so it provided beautiful lighting and scenery. It was a bit overcast when we got there so the lighting kept changing and the clouds added extra depth and shadows to the some of the shots. It is definitely one of my favorite places to photograph, and it makes me really appreciate the beauty of the southwest and reaffirm my love of New Mexico.

Week 38

The all about Sophia edition

These are Sophia's official 2-year portraits. She didn't want to cooperate at first, but I finally got her to smile by letting her draw and then playing peek-a-boo. I haven't had a chance to do Nathan's portraits yet, but I was thinking of doing his either downtown or at a jungle gym with lots of lines and colors.

We celebrated the kids birthdays together since my nephew was born one day after Sophia. The kids had a lot of fun, and we adults had an easy time entertaining and enjoying our time with the kids. Happy 2nd birthday pretty girl.

Week 36

I took the kids to EPCON since I didn't get a chance to go last year. It was really cool to see all my fellow geeks and especially awesome to see Peter Mayhew and Billy Dee Williams (Chewy and Lando, respectively). Most of all, I really wanted to show support for Yvianna, my friend and amazing artist, who had a booth with a lot of cool prints of her work. My only regret is not having gotten a photo of Peter Mayhew while he was standing; you can't really appraise the magnitude of his height from the photo of him sitting.

Week 35

Man, I missed being on the football field. I love the smell of grass in the evening. I didn't take anything worth writing home about, but it was a good time and Nathan got to watch the game as well. I have never been a strong sports shooter, but I enjoy shooting it just as well.

Week 34

I had a shoot at a bookstore in El Paso, and it went really well because the volunteers who run it are really amazing and nice people. Essentially, they only needed two group shots so I snuck this one in there before we started. (I also got a nice, hardback copy of Gone with the Wind for $2.50. Score!) This week was also Nathan's birthday week, but I was running around trying to get everything done that I forgot to take my camera to the zoo. Luckily, Niki took hers to document the day, but I was only able to get a few shots with my phone otherwise.

Week 33

This was also a pretty busy week photographically (and otherwise), but it was mostly for the 25th anniversary I shot. It was such an honor to be part of such a wonderful milestone in their marriage. The love they have for each other radiated from them, and it made my job so much easier because nothing was faked or posed. Being able to convey just a little bit of that love in a photograph is truly an amazing thing.

Week 31

These three handsome gentlemen are the Hanlin boys. We had a really great time hanging out with them, their mom, and the Loeras (whose photos I posted elsewhere).

This fine gentleman is my photographer friend Josh Bachman. Something very interesting must have occurred to his immediate right. Kidding aside, he just came back from Guatemala, and although he's on my blog roll here is the link again if you want to check out some of the images he took down there and some of his other work: The Photo Tells the Story

And this other gentleman is also a photographer and good friend Bruce Berman (also a professor of photography at NMSU). We went to his Border Stories gallery opening at the Branigan Cultural Center and then all met up in Old Mesilla to have dinner. His photographs were really amazing, and I just loved his statement of purpose. He has real heart for the border and its people. Finally, this last photo makes my heart sad because I had to say goodbye to my fella the day before, but I also love it because I know my sister has married the man meant for her.

Family portraits

I also took these in week 30, but I thought it would be better to put them in a separate post since they are more formal portraits. I set up a make-shift studio in my home with a white sheet and used my on camera flash as command to my SB800 flash, which I put facing into a reflective umbrella. Since I was unable to use a full size backdrop I did have to do some editing to the background to clean up the edges, but the lighting came out pretty even given the circumstances. I added some light vignetting on them since the white was just a bit too stark.

Week 28

These are my three favorite photos of the week because they each inspire a different emotion in me. Sophia always knows how to make me laugh. The puppies have become such a big part of our lives, and it's going to be hard to let them go. Finally, what would we photographers be without light? I was taking photographs of the kids and puppies when I saw these leaves lit up by the setting sun out of the corner of my eye.

Week 26

The oleanders are coming along nicely. I have never really had a green thumb since I am more of an animal person, but I have been pretty meticulous in taking care of these plants. I was shooting with my portrait lens, so I had to take a few shots of the ladybug before I got it in good enough focus (still dreaming of that macro lens haha). The second photo is of the first buds of the new oleander growth; when I saw them I may or may not have jumped in delight...either way I was really happy.

Week 25

Congratulations to the Thomas's on their wedding nuptials on the official first day of summer. May their lives be filled with love and happiness. I finally was able to get some photos of the New Mexico state bird, the roadrunner. I told my sister and her new husband that it was a good omen!

Week 24

We have been going to the fountain on base a lot lately since it has been so hot, and it's a fun and free way for the kids to get cool. We met up with my friend Beth there so the kids could play together; it's hard to believe how fast Hunter has grown, but that is the inevitability of children indeed. The third photo happened as I was polishing off a gatorade after swimming, and I noticed the star shape at the bottom of the bottle.

Week 23

I love metal do-hickies: hinges, knobs, locks, and even gumball machines because the metal reflects light in interesting ways. The more textured and detailed the metal the better in my opinion, just more opportunities to photograph something interesting. Something that doesn't reflect the light so well is Ladybug, our dog. I have to catch her in the right light or all the details in her face get lost since her fur is so black. Last but not least, the cookie jar at my mom's house has been looking lonely lately, but beautifully lit it redeems itself even it cannot yield any cookie goodness.

My little dude is growing up in such a hurry, but I am enjoying every minute of it. This week he graduated from kindergarten. I was never quite sure why this is considered a graduation, but it's a fun even nonetheless. I photographed the Padilla kids again, this time with their young uncle Anthony. I took a more formal one of them sitting nicely, but I felt like the image was missing something so I posted this more playful one because it captured their personalities a lot better.

Science project week: Making a compass

Nathan came up with his concept, and I just helped him put it together. He placed 3rd in kindergarten so we were proud of him. He really seemed to like learning about magnetic fields although my knowledge of why they exist is quite rudimentary so the research benefited both of us. Since we are in the northern hemisphere the magnetized side will point south, and vice versa in the southern hemisphere.

Week 16

I think after all the technical shooting I had to do from the previous week, this week I just wanted to enjoy some time with the family without getting all crazy with the camera so I borrowed Craig's Canon Poweshot A640 and just clicked away. Saturday the 23rd was my mom's birthday so after some time at the Golden Egg Hunt at the Armijo Aquatic Center we took her out for a well-deserved dinner at Olive Garden, her favorite place to eat.

Week 15

What a busy week. Two weddings, a field trip, and Easter portraits. It was a lot of fun though. The first wedding was my cousin J and Yvianna's wedding on Sunday at the Rose Garden, and I really had a great time being part of their special day. The kids and I went to Cattleman's where despite the wind blowing dirt everywhere we all had fun. The photo of them is on what's left from the movie set of Courage Under Fire. For the Easter photos of Hunter, I wish we would have been able to borrow someone's real bunny, but at least he didn't have to sit on a scary over sized one at the mall. Last, but not least I also photographed Ron and Nancy's wedding at Aguirre Springs and following lunch at La Posta. Of course I have lot more photos of the weddings, but I am saving those for my actual website so stay tuned for the url once I have that up.

Week 11

The first photo I shot with a manual 50mm I had forgotten all about, and I was reminded of why I love that particular focal length; it will always be one of my favorite lenses to shoot with. The following three were shot with my brand new 85mm. I was really happy with the results I got. The second to last shot I photographed the 20mm, but I framed it at a wonky angle so I ended up cropping it a little tighter. I ended up liking the angle, but not as much as Nathan's winning smile. The final photo is one of the graduation photos I did for my friend's daughter Nicole. I did color selection and added her name to the marquee.

I went to Aguirre Springs to scope out the area of an upcoming wedding I had to shoot, and I realized I hadn't been up that way in five years. I usually go to Dripping Springs to hike since it saves about 30 minutes in drive time, but I really should make it out more since it is such a lovely place.

Week Two

Here we are again, and I come bearing photo gifts. The sunrise photograph was taken on my way back from Nathan's bus stop. I wasn't planning on taking photos since it was cold that morning, but it really caught my eye so I snapped the image with my phone. In the the next two photos, we were at my mom's, and as always the light in there at sunset is just amazing so I couldn't let it go to waste. Thankfully, my kids are tolerant of me taking photos of them; if only my mom were so kind so I could take some nice portraits of her. The last, although grainy and severely blurry, has got to be my favorite. This man came up to us upon exiting a restaurant and asked if he could sing an Alan Jackson song for us in return for some spare change. After a 3 second ethical argument with myself, I decided to shoot a photo of him from the hip with my phone. His hands reminded me of my dad's hands, and even the shirt he was wearing was very similar to one my dad had...so I felt it was a special moment, even though his situation wasn't quite a happy one.

Homeward bound!

Late Christmas with my mom and brother.

I assembled her kitchen and she took it for a test run. All was as it should be.

My side car window covered in snow before I cleared it and headed home from work.

I'm kind of a square because we stayed in on New Year's eve to eat pizzas, play video games, and make a puzzle! It was fun nonetheless. Also, I realize I made a mistake somewhere along the way in this project because of the way I organized the photos according to month threw me off and for some reason the time stamp on my camera keeps getting out of whack. My intention is to rectify the posts, but that is going to be a bit time consuming and throw off some of the comments previously posted...so if it doesn't get done don't take it personally. Lesson learned on my part! Thanks for all your views and comments throughout this project. Maybe I will try again in 2012. In the meantime I will post a couple of photos every Sunday for your enjoyment. Happy New Year everyone!!
